In February, the Colorado Symphony launched the Very Young Composers with a pilot program at Cole Arts & Science Academy, a DPS K-5 school in Denver. Through the Very Young Composers, students learn to create original musical works, using expressive tools available to all children. For four months, a team of musicians from the Colorado Symphony worked with 60 third-grade students to create eighteen original works, which were performed for students, teachers, parents and community members during two public performances in May. Works by a select group of young composers were performed on stage prior to concerts at Boettcher Concert Hall.
The Very Young Composers was created by Jon Deak, former CSO composer in residence who now serves as a children’s advocate with the New York Philharmonic. The VYC is currently active in thirteen public schools in New York City; a network of partner programs operate in Vail, Madison, London, Helsinki, Seoul, Caracas. The CSO team worked with Jon and his team, as well as the Denver-based Playground Ensemble, to develop the Denver pilot; the NY Phil education team will continue to coach and support the program’s growth.
Thanks to our friends at Denver Mind Media for creating this wonderful document of our program!
